Started as a candy company by brother Don and Russ Weiner, they began to craft trading cards in the 50s and 60s. With non-sports sets for television icons such as the Monkees under its belt, the company garnered plenty of attention and was bought by General Mills. It was that they expanded into more entertainment lines creating card sets for icons including Elvis and KISS. Another purchase of the company was in the future and they were soon taken over by a Finnish company that went by the name of Huhtamaki Oy. They also purchased the Leaf organziation, hence the merger of the two brands.
Just a few years before this purchase they were granted a license to create major league baseball cards. In late 1980 the word began to spread that there would be a 1981 baseball card set in stores with the Donruss name attached to it. The set took off, widely accepted by collectors. Several innovations would follow including the all-painted Diamond Kings subset and the popular puzzle inserts.
Now many years later the company owns the rights to many popular trading card brands including Score, Pinnacle, Action Packed, Pacific as well as their best selling titles under the Donruss, Leaf and Playoff names.
