For around $95 dollars most collectors can afford to buy just one box. Although there are a lot of case incentives, that’s more for the high-end dealers. If you are one of them the 1997 Legends autos are being inserted at a one per case rate.
This set has no stickers. This set has dual nickname or inscription signature cards for the first time. And autographs range from singles on up to 8 on a card. There are cut sigs and patches as well so lets see what I got.
My two base cards numbered to just 275 were of Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown and Pats back Laurence Maroney. Not bad but I need a lot more than that and I only have two cards left.
My next card was big. It was an "Ultimate Rookie Signature Materials" card (Ultimate Rookie Signature) of emerging Rams receiver Donnie Avery. The auto was a bit short and the card had a small peel (I can return it and I will) in the upper right, but the card is sharp. It’s numbered to 375 and the jersey swatch is huge. Now that Torry Holt’s days are numbered in St. Louis, Avery could be the next big wideout for Marc Bulger to focus on. Last year he had three scored and 674 yards so this cards was good but it didn’t make my box. So what was next?
I did get a rookie card of Giants CB Terrell Thomas. This sharp card and cool design is numbered to just 275! Thomas had a lot of tackles and one pick and this 32nd overall pick has a bright future and I think, along with the Avery card, made my box a success. Historically rookie cards from this set have done very well on the secondary market.
I know there are some amazing cards seeded in this release and I didn’t hit big but I did well. There are better rookies in Darren McFadden and Matt Forte etc. and there are Tiger Woods autos but all in all I was happy.
